Several recent studies show that the risks of bleeding and heart problems increase significantly in people who take the anti-clotting drug Pradaxa. According to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, Pradaxa (generic name: Dabigatran), which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March 2008 to reduce the risk of stroke in patients in atrial fibrillation generated 932 serious adverse events reports just in the first quarter of 2011.
Our Las Vegas drug injury lawyers are extremely concerned about this particular report, which shows that of 932 adverse event reports, 505 reported cases involved bleeding, more than any other monitored drug such as Warfarin. The total number of events also included 120 cases of hemorrhagic stroke. This is particularly problematic given the fact that Pradaxa is supposed to prevent certain types of strokes. These incidents of bleeding were common among elderly patients, especially those patients over the age of 75.
Another study performed by the Cleveland Clinic showed that patients taking Pradaxa have a 33 percent higher risk of heart attack or severe symptoms of heart disease. This study was based on clinical trials that enrolled 30,514 patients. In addition the Archives of Internal Medicine in its January 9, 2012 issue also pointed out that Pradaxa presents serious risks of heart attacks and excess bleeding. The FDA launched an investigation in December 2011 to determine if Pradaxa creates more of a risk of heart attack or excess bleeding than Warfarin.
Some of the dangerous symptoms patients experience include coughing up blood, heavy menstrual bleeding, frequent nosebleeds and red or black stools. Although those taking Pradaxa should not stop taking the drug without first consulting their doctors, it is important to talk to your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. It is also important to notify healthcare professionals that you are taking Pradaxa before undergoing surgery or dental procedures.
The Medical, Geriatric Social Worker at the Pradaxa Helpline is concerned as well about blleding event for the elderly and the potentail for fatalities form Brain Bleeds.
